What waste containers are the best, which container would fit my community residential area needs, should I lock my waste container, what is the difference between plastic containers and metal and steel containers, etc. All these are questions that deserve proper answers to help you learn more or decide on the best waste disposal management system.
We collected all these dilemmas in one place and plan on doing so in the future as well. Hence, what follows is a short list of the most common questions we’d been asked over time, in no particular order, and our responses to these questions.
5 most frequently asked questions about waste disposal management and equipment
#1: I am a local authority representative. We need to buy new communal waste containers. Which ones are better, plastic or metal waste containers?
The right answer to this question would be it all depends. It depends on the available funds, on the desired lifetime of the waste containers, on the size of the residential areas the containers would be installed in, on the type of community (e.g. rural, suburban or urban), etc.
A sound advice would be to have a grid on a sheet of paper with both good and bad sides of both plastic and metal waste containers, but, generally speaking, metal waste containers have proved to offer a better run for your money. They are weather- and stress-resistant, come in various shapes and sizes (ranging from steel bins to 660 litres containers, 1100 litres, 2400 litres and 3200 litres, and even bigger industrial-size containers), and are fully customizable to comply with communal property ownership guidelines.
#2: What containers to use to dispose of fire ash?
One of the strict rules about waste containers use in urban areas is that disposal of fire ash is strictly prohibited. The rationale behind this is that it can cause fire, as various sorts of inflammable materials are tossed in the communal garbage containers.
Understandably, plastic waste containers are also made of inflammable plastic materials and are prone to melting and burning if exposed to high enough a temperature, which fire ash could surely be a source of.
That is why we always recommend metal waste containers, steel waste containers or galvanized refuse containers for use in all areas where there is a need to dispose of fire ash. Bear in mind, however, that disposal of fire ash is prohibited with inflammable materials so as not to cause unintentional fires.
#3: What containers are most efficient for urban residential areas?
Depending on the residential areas and the number of inhabitants, both individual plastic containers and steel or metal containers are a sound option.
When there are dedicated container areas within a block of buildings, with a limited access, such as fence with a lock, individual plastic containers with volume between 120 and 240 litrеs are advisable. This way no one but the residents could access them and they are fully protected from undesirable visitors.
On the other hand, metal or steel waste containers are the perfect option for majority of urban residential areas, where several containers are meant for the entire street or several buildings. They are stress-resistant, as well as weather-resistant, and come in various sizes to fully accommodate for communal needs.
#4: Should you lock your waste container?
A question both communal authorities and individuals stumble upon is whether to lock the containers or not. The rationale behind the lock is that it prevents rodents and other pests from accessing the contents and tearing it apart and away from the container.
A fairly handy feature of metal waste containers is that they can be easily locked. Bear in mind that, with communal waste containers, the situation with locking them is a bit more complicated. This is so because, if the containers are locked, further waste disposal is inevitably prevented, hence the container loses its main purpose.
#5: When should you hire skip hire service instead of using your community resources?
One of the favourite pastime activities in numerous towns and cities around the world are events in the main square. Whether to celebrate a holiday or dedicate a big concert to charity events, authorities support these types of activities.
Organising big sporting or cultural events in town squares or streets comes with a plethora of logistic questions. One of them is whether to use communal resources to clean them afterwards or simply hire a professional skip hire service to do this job instead. And once again, the answer depends on the individual needs.
In our experience, outsourcing this task to private skip hire services is a better option as it provides communities with less things to worry about and use their resources for their regular activities, such as everyday waste collection and management.
